SONY ANNOUNCES INDUSTRY'S FIRST 16-Mbit SRAM

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 30, 1998 -- Sony Electronics Inc. today announced CXK77V80160TM-9, the industry's first 16-Mbit SRAM. The highest density SRAM currently marketed, Sony's latest high-speed synchronous SRAM is organized as 2,097,152-words-by-8-bits. It will enable reduced component count in designs for supercomputer applications and networking applications, such as routers and switches where a large bandwidth, high-throughput buffer is demanded.

"Sony's rich history in the semiconductor industry is filled with exciting technology breakthroughs and industry firsts," said Hiroshi Hojo, product manager, memory marketing, Sony's Semiconductor Solutions Division. "The CXK77V80160TM-9 contributes to this legacy, providing designers with the first 16-Mbit SRAM and the industry's highest density SRAM." With speeds of up to 9ns (111MHz), the CXK77V80160TM-9 provides fast cycle times. Five nanosecond clock-to-data valid is also featured for high-speed requirements. This high performance is attained without adding unusual power requirements. The CXK77V80160TM-9 offers low power consumption and relies on a standard 3.3V supply. It is LVTTL- and LVCMOS-compatible and provides byte select capabilities, asynchronous /OE and separate I/O.

Sony's CXK77V80160TM-9 is offered as a 78-pin TSOP II. Samples are available now and production quantities will begin shipping in the fourth quarter 1998. In production volumes, pricing will range between $200 and $250 (US).

Based in San Jose, Calif., Sony's Semiconductor Solutions Division is a part of the Component Company of Sony Electronics Inc. The division is a leading supplier and technology leader in the development of semiconductor solutions for emerging and cutting-edge high performance markets in multimedia, communications and ultra high speed SRAM memory. Currently it offers a diverse array of innovative products ranging from memory to multimedia, communications, networking and wireless ICs.
