SONY SEMICONDUCTOR ANNOUNCES INDUSTRY'S FIRST
SINGLE-CHIP REMOTE-CONTROL INFRARED RECEIVERS

SAN JOSE, July 10, 1995 -- Sony Semiconductor Company of America today announced the industry's first single-chip, remote-control infrared receivers. The sensors are available in either upright or horizontal configurations for use in wireless remote control applications. The horizontal SBX8020 and upright SBX8025 sensors support frequencies from 36KHz to 40KHz and include a built-in photo diode.

"These compact, low cost devices are ideal for wireless remote control receiver applications in products such as cable TV boxes, satellite receivers, video cassette recorders, and audio equipment," said J.P. Laussade, vice president, Sony Semiconductor Company of America. "They can also be used as object sensors in garage doors and elevators for safety, and can be used without FCC restriction in any type of wireless remote control product used in small open areas, such as dimmers, curtain openers, and car door operators."

The single chip SBX8020/8025 receivers require a 5V power supply and have low current consumption of 1.1 amps (typical). The built-in photo diode and circuitry feature internal electrostatic shielding to achieve low susceptibility to electromagnetic interference of 800 Vpp (volts peak-to-peak) per meter.

The devices have a maximum accessible range of 6 to 8 meters, depending on surrounding light conditions which impact photo current.

The horizontal SBX8020 and upright SBX8025 IR receivers are available now. Both devices are priced at $2.10 each in sample quantities, and $1.67 in production quantities of 10,000. They are available in 3-pin straight or L-lead frame packages.

Sony Semiconductor Company of America is part of Sony Electronics Inc. The company is a leading OEM supplier of semiconductors, including Static RAM, CCD, D/A and A/D converters, TV and audio ICs, digital filters, serial/optical communication ICs, cellular/PCS ICs and multimedia devices.
