SONY SEMICONDUCTOR DONATES OVER $300,000
IN MEMORY MODULES TO SILICON VALLEY SCHOOLS
SAN JOSE, March 24, 1998 -- Sony Semiconductor Company of America (SSA), a divisional company of Sony
Electronics Inc., today announced plans to donate more than 10,000 cache memory modules to 42 Silicon Valley schools.
More than 26,000 students in nine school districts will benefit from Sony's donation through the 21st Century Education
Initiative's Challenge 2000 program.
At 256K each, the donated modules will add 1GB of secondary cache memory to Silicon Valley school computers.
SSA's secondary cache module is designed for use with computer systems based on Apple Computer Corp.'s Performa
6400/180.
"We're pleased to be part of this effort to aid schools in integrating technology and learning," said Gerry
Beemiller, vice president of sales for SSA. "With this donation we can help students to realize the full processing
performance of their systems' CPUs and enhance their educational experience."
Sponsored by Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, the Initiative encourages business, education and community
leaders to work towards building a world-class educational system in the greater Silicon Valley area. The Challenge
2000 program selects only those schools committed to systematic change as prototypes in this development.
"Challenge 2000 schools are working to use technology as a tool to improve student learning," said Tina Green,
national OEM sales manager for SSA. "Sony's donation of memory modules will assist them in this process."
