SONY SEMICONDUCTOR OFFERS COMPLETE
OPTICAL SERIAL COMMUNICATIONS SOLUTION

SAN JOSE, Sept. 18, 1995 -- Sony Semiconductor Company of America has introduced a family of optical serial communication products targeted for use in serial copper and fiber-optic transmission systems. The initial offering of ten products includes transimpedance amplifiers, post amplifiers, laser drivers, serializers, deserializers, and clock and data recovery ICs for 155Mbps, 622Mbps and 1.062Gbps applications. The family represents one of the most complete optical serial communications solution offered by a single manufacturer.

Two transimpedance amplifiers are included -- the CXA1684M 622Mbps pre-amp for high-speed SONET/SDH, Fiber Channel and ESCON applications and the CXA1685M 155Mbps pre-amp for SONET/SDH, Fiber Channel and FDDI applications. The new amplifiers offer low noise, high transimpedance and wide bandwidth, making them particularly suited for use in fiber-optic systems. Both products are offered in eight-pin SOIC packages.

Two receivers also join the Sony serial optical communications product line up, the 125 to 266Mbps CXB1562AQ post-amp and the 622Mbps CXB1567Q post-amp. These products achieve the 2R (reshaping and regenerating) optical-fiber communication receiver functions on a single chip. Additional features include auto-offset canceler circuitry, signal interruption alarm output, two-level switching function of maximum alarm level for the alarm block and a single 5V power supply. The post-amps are ideal for use in FDDI, SONET/SDH, ESCON and Fiber Channel applications and are available as 32-pin plastic QFPs. In addition to the new products, Sony offers the CXB1561Q-Y receiver, a 3R (reshaping, regenerating and retiming) single chip solution featuring a SAW filter based clock data recovery, ideal for use in SONET/SDH and Fiber Channel. The CXB1561Q-Y receiver is available as a 32-pin ceramic QFP.

Two laser drivers capable of driving modulation current of 60mA up to a data rate of 2Gbps have been added to Sony's laser driver offering. These products are designed to meet the needs of very low speed to high speed communication requirements and are offered in 32-pin ceramic QFPs. The CXB1548Q-Y includes three operational amplifiers for APC (Automatic Power Control). The second product, the CXB1558Q-Y includes D-FF for duty cycle correction. Both products offer a laser shutdown function. An additional laser driver, the CXB1108AQ-Y, offered in a 16-pin metal QFP, is currently available from Sony.

The CXB1580N, a 1.062Gbps clock and data recovery IC, is designed to remove jitter (phase noise on data) and regenerate data in long distance, high speed communications. It's ideal for repeater and hub applications. The new product offers two selectable data rates for use in both 531.25Mbaud or 1062.5Mbaud applications. The chip is TTL/ECL compatible, includes a single +3.3V power supply and offers an on-chip lock detect output monitor. It will be available in a 24-pin SSOP package.

The optical serial communications offering also includes serializer and deserializer products in two-chip or single chip solutions. The CXB1581Q serializer and the CXB1582Q deserializer are perfect companions for high-speed (532Mbps or 1.062Gbps) Fiber Channel communications applications and are offered in 80-pin QFPs. The CXB1583Q, for lower speed (266Mbps) Fiber Channel applications, combines both functions in a single chip, 80-pin QFP solution. The CXB1581Q offers on-chip clock multiplication circuitry, dual serial data output for transmission and loop back, and an on-chip test pattern generator. The CXB1582Q and the CXB1583Q offer on-chip clock recovery circuitry as well as on-chip byte sync detector capability. All three feature low power consumption and operate with a single 3.3V power supply. A separate 5.0V supply pin is available on the CXB1581Q and CXB1582Q to allow full TTL compatibility.
